What Is a Gate Valve? Structure, Working Principle, and Industrial Applications
WHAT IS A GATE VALVE?
A gate valve is an industrial valve used to fully open or fully close flow in a pipeline by lifting or lowering a gate-like disc perpendicular to the flow direction.
Gate valves are not designed for flow regulation, only for on/off service.
STRUCTURE OF GATE VALVE
Main components:
1. Valve Body
Pressure-containing shell (cast iron, steel, stainless steel)
2. Gate (Disc)
Main closing element
3. Stem
Transfers motion from handwheel to gate
4. Handwheel
Manual operation
5. Seals
Prevent leakage
WORKING PRINCIPLE
- Opening: gate lifts → flow passes
- Closing: gate lowers → flow blocked
Vertical linear motion mechanism.
ADVANTAGES
✔ Low pressure drop when fully open
✔ Good sealing
✔ Suitable for large pipelines
✔ High pressure resistance
DISADVANTAGES
❌ Not suitable for throttling
❌ Slow operation
❌ Wear if misused
APPLICATIONS
- Water systems
- Oil & gas pipelines
- Fire protection systems
- Industrial plants
- Large pipeline systems
