What Is a Diaphragm Pressure Gauge?
A Diaphragm Pressure Gauge is a mechanical pressure measuring instrument designed for applications involving viscous, crystallized, corrosive, or contaminated media.
The gauge operates using an elastic diaphragm element that reacts to pressure changes and displays the measured value on the dial. Thanks to its special construction, diaphragm pressure gauges help protect the measuring mechanism from clogging and damage caused by aggressive or sticky fluids.
These gauges are widely used in industries such as:
- Chemical processing
- Petrochemical plants
- Food and beverage
- Pharmaceutical production
- Water treatment systems
- Power plants
- Environmental engineering
Diaphragm pressure gauges are ideal for industrial systems that require high durability and reliable pressure monitoring under harsh operating conditions.
Key Features of Diaphragm Pressure Gauges
Diaphragm pressure gauges are widely used because of the following advantages:
- Accurate measurement in viscous or crystallizing media
- Excellent resistance to clogging and corrosion
- Rugged and durable construction
- High overload protection capability
- Suitable for high vibration environments
- Easy maintenance and cleaning
- Available in threaded or flanged connections
- Stainless steel construction for corrosion resistance
- Stable operation in heavy industrial environments
Most diaphragm pressure gauges are manufactured according to EN 837-3 standards to meet modern industrial requirements.

Construction of a Diaphragm Pressure Gauge
A diaphragm pressure gauge typically consists of:
- Dial face
- Pointer
- Mechanical movement
- Bourdon tube
- Elastic diaphragm element
- Silicone oil filling
- Threaded or flanged process connection
The diaphragm element can be made from stainless steel, PTFE, Hastelloy, or tantalum for superior corrosion resistance in aggressive chemical applications.
Working Principle
When process pressure acts on the diaphragm, the diaphragm deforms according to the pressure level.
This movement is transmitted through silicone oil to the Bourdon tube mechanism inside the gauge. The mechanical movement then drives the pointer to indicate the measured pressure value on the dial.
The diaphragm design prevents the process media from directly contacting the internal measuring mechanism, increasing service life and operational reliability.
Advantages of Diaphragm Pressure Gauges
Compared with standard pressure gauges, diaphragm pressure gauges offer several benefits:
- Protect the measuring system from corrosive media
- Prevent clogging caused by viscous or crystallized fluids
- Withstand vibration and pressure fluctuations
- Long service life in industrial applications
- Easy maintenance and replacement
- Hygienic design suitable for food and pharmaceutical industries
In many applications, diaphragm pressure gauges can withstand overloads up to five times the full-scale value.
