What Is a Compound Pressure Gauge?
A Compound Pressure Gauge is an instrument designed to measure both vacuum pressure and positive pressure within the same system.
Unlike standard pressure gauges that only measure positive pressure, this type of gauge can display:
- Vacuum pressure
- Positive pressure
Compound pressure gauges are commonly used in pneumatic systems, vacuum pumps, industrial pipelines, and applications requiring bidirectional pressure monitoring.
Features of Compound Pressure Gauges
In terms of design and construction, a compound pressure gauge is similar to a conventional mechanical pressure gauge, but its dial includes both negative (-) and positive (+) pressure ranges.
Common pressure units include:
- Bar
- PSI
- MPa
- kg/cm²
The most common vacuum range is:
- -1 bar to 0 bar
Combined with positive pressure ranges such as:
- 0 ~ 3 bar
- 0 ~ 5 bar
- 0 ~ 10 bar
- 0 ~ 24 bar
Example:
A gauge with a range of -1…6 bar will display:
- Vacuum pressure from -1 to 0 bar
- Positive pressure from 0 to 6 bar
Selecting the correct pressure range helps improve gauge accuracy and service life.
Key Advantages
Compound pressure gauges are widely used due to several important benefits:
- Measures both vacuum and positive pressure
- Compact design and easy installation
- High measurement accuracy
- Stable operation in industrial environments
- Wide range of sizes and pressure ranges
- Corrosion-resistant stainless steel construction
- Suitable for gases and liquids
Technical Specifications
- Case material: Stainless Steel 304
- Connection material: Stainless steel or brass
- Thread type: BSP / NPT
- Mounting styles: Bottom mount, back mount, panel mount, offset back mount
- Dial sizes: 63 mm / 100 mm / 150 mm / 200 mm
- Pressure ranges:
- -1…0.6 bar
- -1…1.5 bar
- -1…3 bar
- -1…5 bar
- -1…9 bar
- -1…24 bar
- Suitable media: Air, water, steam, and industrial liquids
Working Principle
When system pressure enters the sensing element inside the gauge, the Bourdon tube deforms and transfers mechanical movement to the pointer.
If the system operates under vacuum conditions, the pointer moves toward the negative pressure section.
When positive pressure increases, the pointer moves toward the positive pressure scale.
This mechanism allows operators to easily monitor different operating conditions within the same system.
Industrial Applications
Compound pressure gauges are widely used in:
- Vacuum pump systems
- Pneumatic systems
- Pressure regulating pipelines
- Laboratory equipment
- Vacuum packaging machines
- Water treatment systems
- Food and pharmaceutical industries
- HVAC systems
- Industrial production lines
In some automated systems, 3-pointer compound pressure gauges are also used for pump control and pressure switch applications.
How to Select the Right Compound Pressure Gauge
When choosing a compound pressure gauge, several important factors should be considered:
Pressure Range
Select a pressure range higher than the actual operating pressure to improve durability and reduce measurement errors.
Working Environment
- Stainless steel gauges are recommended for chemical or wastewater applications
- Diaphragm pressure gauges are preferred for food and pharmaceutical applications
Connection Type
Choose bottom mount, back mount, or panel mount depending on the installation position.
Pressure Units
- Bar: Common in Europe
- PSI: Common in the United States
- MPa / kPa: Common in Asia
