What Is a Check Valve? Structure, Working Principle and Common Types of Check Valves
📝 Introduction
A check valve is an essential device in modern industrial piping systems. Its main function is to allow fluid to flow in one direction only and prevent backflow, helping protect pumps, equipment, and the entire system.
Check valves are widely used in industries such as water supply, steam systems, compressed air, oil & gas, chemicals, food processing, and fire protection systems.
What Is a Check Valve?
A check valve (also known as a non-return valve) is a type of valve that operates automatically, without manual control or actuators.
👉 When flow moves in the correct direction → the valve opens
👉 When flow reverses or pressure drops → the valve closes automatically
Other names:
- Check Valve
- Non-return Valve (NRV)
- One-way Valve
- Backflow Prevention Valve
Check Valve Structure
Although designs vary, most check valves consist of the following main components:
1. Valve Body
- The main housing containing all internal parts
- Materials: cast iron, steel, stainless steel, plastic
2. Disc / Closure Element
- The component that opens/closes the flow
- Types: swing disc, lift disc, ball, piston
3. Hinge / Shaft
- Guides the movement of the disc
4. Spring (optional)
- Helps quick closing and reduces water hammer
5. Seat (Sealing Surface)
- Ensures tight shut-off
- Materials: PTFE, EPDM, metal
Working Principle of a Check Valve
Check valves operate based on flow pressure:
When Opening:
- Flow pressure pushes the disc open
- Fluid passes through
When Closing:
- Flow decreases or reverses
- Gravity and/or spring force closes the disc
👉 Prevents reverse flow completely
Common Types of Check Valves
1. Swing Check Valve
- Uses a hinged disc
Advantages:
✔ Low pressure loss
✔ Suitable for large pipelines
Applications:
- Water systems
- Pump systems
- Irrigation
2. Spring Check Valve
- Equipped with a spring
Advantages:
✔ Fast closing
✔ Prevents water hammer
✔ Can be installed in multiple positions
Applications:
- Compressed air systems
- High-pressure water systems
3. Dual Plate Check Valve
- Two spring-loaded plates
Advantages:
✔ Compact design
✔ Quick closing
Applications:
- HVAC systems
- Industrial pipelines
4. Lift Check Valve
- Disc lifts vertically
Advantages:
✔ High sealing performance
✔ Stable operation
Applications:
- Steam systems
- Hot oil
5. Ball Check Valve
- Uses a ball as closure
Advantages:
✔ Simple design
✔ Suitable for dirty fluids
Applications:
- Wastewater
- Slurry and chemicals
6. Piston Check Valve
- Uses piston movement
Applications:
- High-pressure systems
- Heavy industrial use
Classification by Material
Cast Iron Check Valve
- Cost-effective
- Used for water and fire protection
Stainless Steel Check Valve (304/316)
- Corrosion-resistant
- Suitable for chemicals and food industry
Steel Check Valve
- High temperature and pressure resistance
- Used for steam and oil
Plastic Check Valve (PVC, CPVC, UPVC)
- Chemical resistant
- Used for water and light chemicals
Selecting Check Valves by Media

Not recommended:
- Swing check valve (unstable with steam)
💧 Water
Recommended:
- Swing check valve
- Dual plate check valve
- Spring check valve
Material:
- Cast iron with EPDM seat
🛢 Oil & Fuel
Recommended:
- Spring check valve
- Lift check valve
Material:
- Steel or stainless steel
- NBR seal
💨 Compressed Air
Recommended:
- Spring check valve
Reason:
- Fast response, stable operation
🧪 Chemicals
Recommended:
- Ball check valve
- Plastic or stainless steel valve
Seal:
- PTFE (Teflon)
🌊 Wastewater / Slurry
Recommended:
- Ball check valve
- Swing check valve
Reason:
- Anti-clogging capability
Advantages of Check Valves
